Lyttelton 8841
Lyttelton Gaol from the corner of Oxford and Winchester Streets, about 1900, Palliser family collection, Canterbury Museum, 1991.345.3
We have wound up the sound installation on the Gaol site, but it’s not too late to learn more about the women who served time at Lyttelton’s prison more than 100 years ago.
The Women of Lyttelton Gaol database is searchable on our website, and you can still hear the original soundscape there too. We have also installed some of the banners that were at the Lyttelton Library in our cabin on the new Museum site at 35 London Street open 9:30am - 1:30pm Thursdays and Fridays.
The project was a great success and we know it will be just the beginning of understanding more about the Gaol and its place in our history.
In particular, we’d really like to thank the team who contributed hundreds of hours of research, creativity and energy to make the project possible. Your contribution is now a permanent part of Lyttelton’s heritage resources.
